Create a custom-colored marker with the new Karappo pens!
Karappo, the Japanese word for empty, both names and describes these new markers from Kuretake. They come in several pieces, ready to be filled with ink of whatever color you choose.
This version features a fine brush tip.
Please note: This is an empty pen, no ink is included. You can fill these pens with most fountain pen / non-waterproof inks. Compatible inks found here include the Kuretake's "Ink-Cafe at Home" kit, the Kuretake Ink Cafe Meiji no Iro inks, Kuretake Art Nouveau Inks, Pebeo Colorex, or the Ecoline watercolor inks.
(*Note: Thicker inks, like acrylics or other waterproof pigment-based inks, will have trouble flowing through this type of marker and should not be used. Metallics are also not recommended as the shimmering pigments may not be able to travel through the tip.)
Karappo pens are filled by letting the included "ink reservoir" piece soak up ink and then sealing that piece inside of the pen. For details on how to fill these pens, click on the "HOW TO FILL" tab above. **Please note: These are disposable pens. After they are filled once and the plug is sealed, they cannot be opened and refilled again. For refillable Karappo pens, see the "cartridge-type" version.**
Prepare the ink you wish to use inside the pen. It can be an existing color straight from the ink bottle, or you can mix your own custom color inside an empty cup or jar.
Place one end of the "ink reservoir" piece directly into the ink and let it sit while some ink soaks into it. Remove this piece when it is at least 50% full, but more ideally about 80% full of ink.
Remove the reservoir from the ink and wipe off excess ink with a tissue or paper towel.
Insert the ink reservoir into the marker body, with the end that absorbed the ink pointing down into the tip.
Place the end cap onto the top of the pen. To make sure that it seals completely, turn the pen tip-side up and press the end cap down onto a table or flat surface to help press it in all the way.
Ink will begin flowing through the tip of the pen and then it is ready to use! Use the included round stickers to mark with the ink color and label the pen cap for easy identification.

-Be sure to use only the recommended types of ink. (Kuretake Ink-Café, fountain pen inks, or most dye-based / non-waterproof inks) Other types may not flow correctly through the pen.
-Due to the material used in the ink reservoir, the actual color of the ink that comes from the pen may differ slightly from / be a bit lighter than the base ink used to fill the pen.
-These pens are not refillable. Once the plug is sealed, the pens should not be opened. When ink runs out, the pens are disposable.
